Medicare Supplements
Commonly referred to as Medigap plans, Medicare Supplements are secondary to Medicare and supplement costs not paid by Original Medicare (Part A & Part B). The plan benefits are federally-regulated and offer coverage in all 50 states and U.S. territories, as there are no network restrictions. Over 70% of Medicare beneficiaries are covered by Medigap plans. Referrals are not required. There are numerous supplemental plans from which to choose, providing various levels of coverage.

Medicare  Advantage
Frequently known as Medicare Part C, are plans through a private health insurance company, and approved by Medicare. These plans are typically HMOs that contract with specific facilities and and their contracted doctors. Coverage is basically limited to specific service areas mostly on a regional basis. Co-pays and co-insurance are representative of these plans and typically referrals to a specialist are required. Some Medicare Advantage plans combine prescription drug coverage with your medical benefits.

Part D Prescription Drug Plans

Medicare Part D Prescription Drug plans are offered by private companies who offer various coverages. The coverage changes year to year, so it is advisable to review your current plan as new plans become available in October with a January 1 effective date. Factors to consider are deductibles, co-pays, and the company's formulary ( a list of covered drugs). There a many eligibilty requirements that one must take into consideration concerning late-enrollment penalties, creditable coverage, and network restrictions.
